The 5energies “In the Garden” Literacy Package
A blend of Text, Technology and Talent!
On Friday, 18th September, at the Consult and Collaborate Joint Conference in Brisbane, we were excited to launch the innovative, Australian literacy package titled ‘In the Garden’. Written and illustrated by Sarah Amies, an ardent environmentalist and experienced teacher, Sarah used ordinary food dyes to create extraordinary pictures of the creatures who inhabit her garden. These texts are not levelled, so can be used for Early Childhood classes but also for reluctant readers of an older age.
The 5energies Literacy Package comes with individual copies of the seven texts, a big book (There are Frogs in My Garden), six Mystery Sheets (for visual processing and other activities), a book of resources for teachers (Active Learning for Creative Children) with unit of work suggestions based on Bloom’s Taxonomy, a CD of music based on each of the creatures, and a DVD of supported reading. Read by actor and narrator Patrick Mitchell, the DVD has the following modes of supported reading in the one package:
- Listening Story: Patrick narrates the story (a picture of the garden in the background);
- Telling Story: The story is told, with the narrator on the full screen (no background pictures or text);
- Learning Story: The narrator tells the story against the backdrop of the illustrations;
- Reading Story ( Beginner’s Cursive): The narrator tells the story against the backdrop of the illustrations, but text is added in Beginner’s Cursive;
- Reading Story (Arial): The narrator tells the story against the backdrop of the illustrations, but text is in Arial font this time;
- Supported Reading: The illustrations and text are shown, with the narrator (not on screen) telling the story;
- Independent Reading: The text alone is shown, for independent reading.
- Extended Reading: An additional four levels of text are available from the ‘teachers only’ section of the website (coming soon!)
Price: Due to the overwhelming support of the package, the Conference Special has been extended until 6th October.
